Self-Storage Security: Improving Unit Safety

Updated: Oct 1

Self-storage facilities continue to crop up across the U.S., with renters storing everything from furniture and equipment to artwork, important records and valuable possessions. There are more than 50,000 self-storage facilities in the U.S. and the market size is expected to reach more than $83 billion in 2027. The growth in these types of facilities is attributed to high housing costs, workers relocating and the desire for more space.

Self-storage security and live video monitoring

As their numbers increase, the challenges in keeping properties safe and secure has also escalated. Self-storage facilities are prone to theft and vandalism, trespassing and loitering and even illegal activities in individual units. As examples, these scenarios recently played out across the country:

  • This summer in San Antionio, nearly $20,000 worth of items were stolen from a self-storage facility when some 10 units were wiped clean.

  • In Denver, storage unit thefts continue to rise in Arapahoe County, where sheriff’s deputies stated nearly 60 break-ins were reported in 2024, with sophisticated thieves burglarizing units and stashing property to retrieve later.

  • In Chicago, an entrepreneur lost most of his inventory and equipment from a storage unit break-in, leaving the designer without his fashion collection, estimated at $15,000 for clothing and equipment. Even worse, the insurance company denied the claim, as there was “no evidence of breaking and entering.”

RVM solves self-storage security challenges

iDter’s Remote Video Monitoring (RVM) solves the security challenges of self-storage properties. iDter’s security system is the industry’s only completely automated camera monitoring solution that detects intruders and trespassers within seconds and takes immediate action to drive them off the site before a potential loss.

We deliver a full solution to self-storage buildings and manufacture and develop each part of our camera monitoring security system, including the award-winning 4K Niō Guardian cameras, software, firmware, cloud utilities, AI and mobile apps. Our total solution approach also includes monitoring, servicing and customer support.

With Niō Guardians positioned around the perimeter at key areas of the self-storage facility and detecting movement in seconds, the system starts its automated responses that drive unwanted persons away quickly: LED lights for stark illumination, blinding strobes of red and blue LEDs, piercing sirens, situation-appropriate voice-down warning messages and intimidating sound effects.

iDter live monitors security events to determine if actions were successful and with real-time alerts and video clips sent to mobile devices so users can visually assess the area of detection. If intruders persist, a video verified alarm is sent to a professional, UL central monitoring station, where operators dispatch authorities through 911 operators.

Self-storage management have the option of immediate notification, including video on their mobile devices that an event is in progress. The mobile app enables management to view the event and automated deterrence sequences, talk to the person using the Niō embedded microphone and speakers, snooze the system and view the police or guard company’s response to the dispatch.

The best security camera monitoring system and automated RVM for your self-storage facility is only available from iDter. Let us help you create a solution that will drive off intruders and save your self-service facility from business loss and even liability claims. Contact us today to learn more.
